Day 0000 0101

List of activities
1. Activation Key
2. Enable Remote Desktop
3. Disable Firewall
4. Checks
5. DNS Server Settings
6. Windows 7 Install on Workstation

Today begin with making sure that all the updates for the server had been installed.

1. Activation Key - Server 2008
-from command prompt - type:
slgmr -lpk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

slgmr = software licensing manager
ipk = install product code

This was followed by a discussion of the different types of Key Management Software. 'KMS' and 'MAK' are two different types of authentication for the server. With KMS, if the server does not communicate with the product server within 180 days the authentication will fail and the service. Functioning. MAK Stands for Multiple Activation Key which authenticates via the Internet. The owner of the software can use the software with a specific number of “seats”.

2. Enable Remote Desktop
Next the 'Enable Remote Desktop' was turned on to allow access to the server from other workstations.

Initial Configuration Tasks window can be accessed by typing “oobe".

3. Disabling the firewall
The firewall needs to be disabled or three different locations.
->Go to Windows Firewall
->Windows Firewall Advanced Properties
-Windows firewall was disabled in each of the three tabs in this window. This is necessary so that the shared folder we created will be visible.

4. Checks
  • Checked to make sure that the time zone is set to mountain time.
  • Before beginning the change of the DNS settings, Lyle had us check the loopback address. It should be set to 127.0.0.1.
  • Confirm the server name and network name are correct. The server name was taken from our network design. The network name is: network5769
5. Change DNS Settings (in preperation for Active Directory)
The class now has access to Lyle's server and so changes were necessary in our server DNS settings.
a) Change the server DNS on the network interface card.
This was changed to Lyle's server. (142.66.33.100; 142.66.33.101)

IP Address: 192.168.15.50
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.16.254
DNS 1: 142.66.33.100
DNS 2:142.66.33.101

b) Reconfigured the DNS service
->Administrative Tools
->DNS

This section should contain a list of servers providing alternate routes to access the Internet. The first server in the list is ours (192.168.16.50). The second servers is Lyle's (192.168.181. 50). We added several other servers as well. If an address cannot be reconciled within our network it will be sent to Lyle server.

c) Reconfigure the DHCP.
The third related setting chan
ge that we made was to the DHCP server settings. This tells the workstations how to find the DNS server.
->DHCP administrator

6. Windows 7 Installation

A fresh installation of Windows 7 was done on the two workstations. To boot from t
he installation disk, press F12 as the system is booting up. Choose to boot from the CD drive. Installation was carried out using 'Custom (Advanced).

The installation was done on Disk 0, Partition 1 overwriting the existing Windows 7 installation. The username was assigned (admin) and the computer name was taken from our network diagram, rm223lab01.

The computer was assigned: network5679. As well, the missing drivers were installed. The Dell documentation indicated that the Vista drivers should be used for Windows 7. These were installed. (Chipset drivers)
