VOIP, Packet Sniffing and New Media Center Tour

QOS - Quality of Serivce
Qualtiy of Service needs to be enable on the switch. This allows gold traffic to go through relatively uninterupted. The internet is not QOS enabled. This is seen in the buffering that occurs when downloading from media sites like YouTube.

The exercise that was completed today used VOIP on an internal network. A Private Branch Exchange (PBX) server was setup on Lyle's server with the IP of 192.168.181.251. Extensions were assigned to the different groups.

The first step was to enable QOS on the switch.
Commands:
>qos enable
>qos trust port
>qos apply
>write memory
>copy working certified



X-Lite
X-Lite is a VOIP softphone application that we used to connect within our network. Setting up the software included entering the IP of the PBX server, our extension and turning on the QOS option. The QOS option was set in the preference windows. This was set to 46. The quality of service is assigned a number between 0 and 48.


Connections were made to other members in the class by dialing their extension set up by Lyle.

Wireshark
Wireshark is an etwork protocol analyzer that we used to check quality of service while calling. The "packet sniff" was carried out while calling someone on X-Lite. The captured data was searched for the dscp hexidecimal equivalent of 46 which is 0x2e. This indicated that the VOIP traffic was being recognized and going through as Gold traffic.



School Tour
The class ended with a tour of the New Media Center in Chinook High School. It was a fascinating and impressive tour. One aspect that struck me was how the vendors worked with the SD's people to bring about the project. This has created a group of individuals with a greater investment and ownership in the project. This should greatly facilitate the implementation of programs for students that optimizes the facility. It is important to remember that programs are people. It is the people with the vision, knowledge, ability and expertise that will create the impact on students and learning. This is the desired end of all the work and investment. It is not about having a trophy and the bragging rights.
