Day 0000 0010

1. Documentation
Documenting is important. Put it in a form that others will understand. Documentation often is handed of to others to use. To much point form may not communicate the necessary information to others.

2. Politics, risk and change agents
Change agents are in a political position and these positions involve risk. It is important to have a sense of the nature of roles in the organization. (ie. Who are the connectors?)

Balance and options
financial options - in contract positions, consider the risk and set up a financial plan that will carry through the lean times. Changes in leadership, funding and educational climate can result in unforeseen changes in a position.
working options - look for other options. Networking and expanding ones sphere of influence can provide opportunities when change does happen.
recreational options - (a lesson from John Travolta) -When dry seasons come stepped back and focused on other areas rather then knocking on doors harder.

3. http acess to switches - Unlocking all session types
Turn on authentication for http, telnet etc.

>copy working certified - this will copy the working memory to the certified.

Unlocking all session types allowed for accessing the switch via the network. (Similar process to accessing SOHO routers.) This is done by entering the IP address into the address bar of a browser.

4. Pinging and IP addresses

Pinging on Mac - use Terminal.app (Mac HD -> applications -> utilities -> Terminal.app
Pinging on PC - run "cmd"

Our group used a PC with windows 7 and a Mac running Snow Leopard. The Windows 7 computer had a firewall running that blocked off pinging. A new rule needed to be added opening up port 7 for pinging.

The exercise involving pinging to check the connectivity of a variety of IP addresses and subnet masks came up with a variety of results. Different operating systems responded differently when pinged.

This entire process was a great exercise problem solving. This involved identifying which machine was creating the issue and how this could be resolved.
