Day 0000 0001

Setup and assign IP to Alcatel Switch

Equipment quality
Enterprise level equipment has a longer mtbf - mean time between failure. Look for a mtbf of 10 years.

Assigning Switch IP Address
There were a few problems installing the USB to serial bridge. The supplied disks did not contain the correct drivers for Snow Leopard. The correct drivers installed almost seamlessly on Windows 7. Coolterm was used to connect to the switch Alcatel 6648 Omniswitch . The correct serial port was loaded when the Rescan Serial Ports button was clicked.

The Mac drivers were later downloaded from here.

Figure 1. Coolterm settings.

Commands used:
Login password: admin
password: switch

>ip interface vlan-1 address 192.168.16.254 vlan 1

>write memory

Understanding the underlying design of the switches helped in understanding the commands used. There are two operating systems in the switch - working and certified. The certified system is the one that is referenced if there are inconsistencies between the two. Changes are made to the working system and copied to the certified operating system.

>copy working certified

>reload - reboots the switch

>Show IP interface - used to identify the new IP address.

  1. Hi Ken,

Just a quick point of clarification regarding, "Enterprise level equipment has a longer mtbf - mean time between failure. Look for a mtbf of 10 years" In the case described we had purchased Carrier Grade Equipment for a high-speed wireless network and amortized it over 10 years. Hence we needed at least a 10 year MTBF.

More typically with LAN equipment you will not ask a 10 year life-span. By the way, we are now past the 10 year point with the referenced network and the equipment has held up very well.

    Hope this helps.

    Sincerely,

    Maurice Hollingsworth
