Setting up a Virtual Operating System

1. Install Magic Disc–This is a virtual disk program that can be downloaded free from the Internet. This is needed to open up installation applications in ISO form.
Lyle had placed these programs in the shared folder on server. The software was installed on the workstation Using the administrator account.


2. VirtualBox was installed next. The default installation location was selected. When the security questions came up Install was selected.


3. Installation of Red Hat virtual book.

A new virtual machine was created. It was given the name Red Hat. This automatically selected the operating system of Linux with the version.

The basic memory was increased to 1024 MB. Next, the option–create new hard disk–in the Virtual Hard Disk was selected. The hard disk storage type was–Dynamically expanding storage.

Size of the virtual hard disk The was increased to 20 GB in the Virtual Disk Location and Size window.

Following this, the operating system installation file was mapped to virtual disk drive, in our case drive E. Next was selected and the operating system CentOS installation window came up.

Install or upgrade and existing system was selected.


When given the option we chose to skip the testing of the media.

Once we passed language option, we were given the choice of the type of devices our installation would involve. Basic Storage Devices was chosen. A warning came up “error processing drive”. The option chosen was Reinitialize all. The password we used was the default password for the system.

In the next window the type of installation was Replace Existing Linux System. Minimal installation was selected in the next window.

After the installation is complete, a network connection was created. A browser window was open and the connection was made to the Internet.
